Three World Premieres!

Dear Friends,

I am thrilled to let you know about the upcoming world premieres of three new chamber pieces of mine happening in the next few weeks:

Thursday, January 23, 8 pm @ Boston Conservatory (31 Hemenway, T401)
Sonata (Mvt. 1) for violin and piano for 48 St. Stephen

Saturday, January 25, 7 pm @ SPLICE Festival. Kalamazoo, Michigan
DYSTOPIA for trumpet, percussion, piano, and electronics for SPLICE Ensemble

Sunday, February 9, 5 pm @ Boston Conservatory (31 Hemenway, T401)
Status Quo for the Boston Conservatory Faculty Wind Quintet

This moment is particularly special to me, as it finally feels like a return to my full life as an active composer, after a less productive period of several years following the pandemic. I hope that some of you will be able to make it out to one or more of these performances, your support means a lot to me! You can scroll down for more info about these pieces.

All best,
Dan

48 St. Stephen

48 St. Stephen

First up, incredible violin and piano duo 48 St. Stephen (Clara Kim and Angela Kim) will be premiering the first movement of my Sonata for violin and piano this Thursday, January 23 at Boston Conservatory! I am really excited about this work in which, after many years of resisting, I finally came around to giving a piece of mine a "traditional" classical title. As you might expect, it is a long way from an 18th century Classical piece, but it is my sincere attempt to directly engage and grapple with the spirit that originally animated this form which is at the root of abstract instrumental music.

Next we have the premiere of DYSTOPIA, a four movement work for SPLICE Ensemble for trio and electronics, receiving its premiere this Saturday, January 25th at the SPLICE Festival in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Inspired by the form of Haydn's 49th Symphony in F minor "La Passione," DYSTOPIA begins totally acoustically, gradually adding electronic elements, and ends with a multi-genre collage of samples, relentlessly driving the pace of the performers.
